About this work
Figures in flowing coats and headscarves stagger sideways across a wooden village street as wind whips their garments and scatters flying boards, leaves, and stars from a plank roof above them. A flock of geese flees underfoot while a church with onion domes and rows of log houses recede into the background.
Rendered entirely in fine pen and ink hatching, the drawing builds volume and motion through dense parallel and crosshatched lines rather than tone or color. Diagonal strokes across the sky and swirling contour lines around the figures convey the force of the gust, giving the scene a charged, almost frantic energy.
