About this work
A central oval panel shows a caped figure in a broad hat walking forward past a leafless tree and a small building, the cloak swirling in sharp diagonal folds. Around this main scene, smaller framed vignettes depict a horseman brandishing a sword, three figures in period dress including a woman, a scuffle among several men, and a horse-drawn carriage on a road.
Executed as a black-line woodcut, the print uses fine parallel hatching for mid-tones and dense cross-hatching for deep shadow, setting stark black cloak and figures against bare white paper. The compact, multi-scene layout typical of narrative book illustration gives the linked panels a theatrical, adventurous rhythm.
