About this work
A black-and-white woodcut divides into four corner panels, each holding the bust of a Spanish Golden Age cavalier in ruffled collar, plumed hat and thick moustache. At the center a large circular panel shows a younger, softer-featured figure in ridged armor and fur trim, cradling a helmet and gripping a long musket.
Rendered entirely in fine engraved lines, the print builds volume through dense parallel and cross-hatching, giving fabrics, feathers and armor a strongly graphic texture. The composition is symmetrical and emblem-like, evoking historical book illustration, with dramatic, theatrical staging of costume and character.
