About this work
A man in dark theatrical dress and an elaborately plumed hat leans over a gilded, carved wooden theatre box holding a row of small painted figures arranged like a miniature stage. At his feet a monkey on a chain sits beside an empty bowl set on the ground.
Deep browns and blacks fill the background, set off by the gold ornament of the theatre box and flashes of red and blue in the costume. Heavy impasto and dramatic side light pick out the face and gilded carving, lending the scene a theatrical, faintly mysterious air.
