About this work
A figure with blue-painted skin crouches low, one arm bent with a hand resting near the chin, wearing a tall crown-like headdress encrusted with gold and jewels and an ornamented breastplate over bare blue arms and legs. The surrounding space is almost entirely swallowed in near-black shadow, isolating the figure at the center.
Thick, roughly worked paint models the headdress in glinting golds, reds and whites against the deep blue-black body and background. Light picks out only the crown, chest ornament and lower face, leaving the rest to dissolve into darkness, creating a brooding, mysterious, theatrical effect.
