About this work
Four figures dressed in black stand in a row against an almost black backdrop, each bent over a jointed wooden marionette suspended below on taut strings. Their hands grip the crossed control bars, working the puppets into standing poses; heads tilt down in shared focus, one figure a fair-haired woman in a scarf, the others men with faces partly turned away.
Painted in a tenebrist palette of near-black browns with a single warm light raking across hands and faces, the puppeteers' bodies dissolve into shadow while the pale wooden figures below stay lit against the dark floor. Brushwork is smooth and controlled on skin and wood against a loosely scumbled ground, and the sustained gloom with repeated gesture creates a hushed, theatrical tension.
