About this work
A woman's head and shoulders emerge from an almost entirely black background, her dark hair merging with the shadow around her. Light falls across the left side of her face, illuminating cheek, nose and brow, while the right side dissolves into deep shadow, and her eyes meet the viewer directly and without expression.
Warm ochre and umber tones model the lit half of the face in thick, textured strokes, sharply set off by the surrounding near-black paint applied more thinly and loosely. The strong chiaroscuro and unbroken dark ground give the portrait a brooding, mysterious weight.
