About this work
A cluttered tabletop holds an assortment of old objects: a lit kerosene lantern, a tall glass-chimney lamp, a squat metal jug, a dark bottle, and a bunch of keys hanging on the wall behind. To the right, softly lit against the dark, a young face appears as if seen in a mirror or glass, gazing off to the side.
Deep blue-grey shadow fills most of the canvas, pierced by the warm orange glow of the lit lamp, which becomes the single strongest light source and focal point. Paint is applied thinly and smoothly in the dim areas, then thickened around the lamp's glass and flame. The low-key lighting and quiet stillness give the still life a hushed, mysterious atmosphere.
