About this work
A narrow clearing or path cuts through a snowy forest, flanked by dark evergreen boughs in the near foreground and rows of birches and pines fading into a misty distance. The composition is nearly symmetrical, drawing the eye toward a pale glow at the vanishing point.
Rendered almost entirely out of soft focus, the scene dissolves into overlapping veils of white, pale blue, grey and touches of ochre where light filters through the trees. Thin, feathered strokes blur edges into atmosphere rather than defining form, giving the winter woods a hushed, dreamlike quiet.
