About this work
Two young girls appear at the bottom edge of the canvas beneath a towering tree, their faces and shoulders emerging from an otherwise near-abstract mass of trunk and branches. One child faces forward with a direct gaze, the other, with long hair caught by a ribbon, is turned in profile beside her. The tree's thick reddish-brown trunk splits the composition vertically, its gnarled roots and branches spreading outward to fill almost the entire upper field.
The foliage is built from countless short, choppy strokes of blue, green, and ochre that read as flickering light rather than individual leaves, while the girls' faces are painted more softly in pale flesh tones. Cooler blues dominate the shaded canopy, warmed by streaks of yellow where light breaks through. The dense, textured surface and the way the children seem half-absorbed into the tree give the picture a hushed, dreamlike stillness.
