About this work
The composition is filled edge to edge with a pond's surface: overlapping green and gold lily pads crowd the foreground, while clusters of pink and white water lilies dot the upper right. Dark, near-black water shows through the gaps, reflecting pale streaks of sky and the shadows of unseen trees. No shoreline is visible.
Color moves from cool blues and near-blacks in the water to warm golds, olives, and rose pinks on the pads and blossoms, applied in thick, broken strokes that build texture across the surface.
