About this work
Tall stalks of fireweed with pink-purple flower spikes crowd the foreground and middle ground of an open meadow, their dark red stems rising among green grass and broad leaves. The land flattens toward a distant tree line, above which a band of glowing pink and mauve light meets deepening blue-gray clouds.
The flowers are built with thick dabs and short knife strokes of pink and magenta over a green ground, while the sky is worked in soft, blended sweeps of rose, lavender, and slate blue. The fading light and hushed palette give the field a quiet, crepuscular mood.
