About this work
A tall, narrow figure stands at the center, its body and loose garment reduced to a few broad vertical strokes of flesh and pale fabric tones. Behind it, patches of blue and touches of red-roofed buildings suggest a seaside village and greenery, while curling white and cream shapes at the lower left could be sails or drapery caught in motion.
The surface is worked with a loaded brush and palette knife in slashing, wind-driven strokes of ultramarine, ochre and white, leaving the forms only partially resolved. The vigorous, almost violent handling and cool-warm contrast give the image a restless, gusty energy true to its title.
