About this work
A fair, haloed nude woman stands at the center holding a billowing red and gold scarf overhead, poised above a golden shell-like form; below her three dark green, scaly sea-horses churn through the waves pulling her forward, while two winged cherubs fly above and two bearded, red-crested triton figures blow horns on either side, one accompanied by a small green sea-serpent shape.
Deep ultramarine and turquoise waves dominate the composition, built up in dense curling brushstrokes, while the golden flesh tones and red drapery of the central figure form a warm, radiant focal point; the crowded, symmetrical arrangement of sea creatures and the fine linear hatching of painted maiolica give the scene a buoyant, celebratory energy.
