About this work
A dancer in a pale-blue costume with gold trim kneels on one knee on a checkered black-and-red floor, one arm arched overhead, eyes closed. Behind her, a ring of dark red nude figures joins hands in a circling dance across a green hillside under a deep blue sky, recalling Matisse's famous round dance. A pale curtain frames the left edge.
Flat, saturated blues, greens and brick reds are laid in broad, unmodulated planes with minimal shading, echoing the simplified figures and bold color of early modern painting. Gold striping accents the dancer's costume against the matte, poster-like surfaces, setting the calm, contained pose of the foreground figure against the wheeling rhythm of the ring behind her.
