About this work
Three figures in elaborate historical dress are grouped together in a garden. At centre, a woman in a gold jewel-toned gown and tall powdered wig plays a mandolin; behind her stands a man in a pink satin coat with a ruffled collar, and at left a third woman appears in profile wearing a jewelled headdress. Roses and other flowers surround them, with birds among the blooms and a sailing ship visible behind.
Dense, jewel-bright colour - gold, pink, teal and violet - is laid on in flat, patterned passages closer to brocade than naturalistic light. Faces and hands are modelled more carefully than the stylised ornament around them, and the crowding of pattern and flowers gives the scene a festive, theatrical richness.
