“Sunflowers”

A round plate of halved oranges, arranged like a flower itself, sits at the center of the composition alongside a whole orange, a split pomegranate, a white ceramic jug, a glass carafe and an oil lamp. Behind these objects, giant sunflower heads fill the whole upper background, their petals and dark centers rendered as large flat decorative shapes rather than naturalistic blooms.

Saturated yellows, oranges and blues are laid in flat, poster-like planes with visible loose brushstrokes in the corners, giving the still life a bold, decorative, almost graphic energy. The high-key palette and cheerful arrangement produce a warm, playful mood.
