About this work
Three nude young women stand together against a pale blue sky, each crowned with a wreath of roses, carnations and berries, arms linked and hands touching one another's shoulders and hips. One holds a length of rose-pink fabric embroidered with fruit; a border of flowers, tulips, grapes, pears, tomatoes and melons frames all four sides and spills across the ground at their feet.
Skin is rendered in smooth, pale academic tones against the flat sky, while every bloom and fruit in the border is painted in crisp, saturated detail, almost as a catalogue of a garden's yield. The dense, symmetrical framing and calm poses of the three figures give the whole a decorative, festive abundance.
