About this work
A tall blue cathedral cupola with arched openings rises over a jumble of pink, ochre and grey rooftops under a streaked violet evening sky. Along a foreground ledge stand a dark glass jug and a green bottle holding dried physalis pods and curling leaves, a stemmed glass of red wine, a plum on a saucer, a corked bottle and a scatter of small shells.
Color is pushed toward saturated, non-naturalistic contrasts - turquoise domes, magenta sky, orange walls - built from flat, faceted planes rather than atmospheric blending. The still-life objects share the cathedral's jewel-toned treatment, flattening the distinction between near and far. The effect is festive and richly patterned, more ornamental tableau than topographic view.
