Carpet

Three pomegranates and two pale quinces are piled on a white plate, a slender leafy twig rising above them, resting on the turned-down corner of a densely woven red carpet. The carpet's central motif, a golden eight-pointed star with a blue flower at its heart, dominates the lower two-thirds of the canvas, framed by smaller pink, blue and green motifs.

The fruit is picked out in warm rose, ochre and pink against a flat black ground, its glossy highlights sharply lit from one side. The carpet is painted in dense, almost embroidered strokes of red, gold, sky-blue and green, giving the lower half a rich, decorative density that contrasts with the sparse still life above.
