About this work
A richly patterned oriental textile drapes behind Eastern tableware: a glazed brown plate with incised ornament, a tall turquoise bottle with ornate inlay, and a burnished copper ewer with an engraved neck. In front, a white teapot, wedges of nougat-like sweets, a sliced pomegranate spilling red seeds, whole almonds, and a small brass oil lamp sit on a colorful woven rug.
Saturated blues, purples, oranges, and reds play against an angular, patchwork background of diamonds and stripes echoing the textile's pattern. Paint is applied in confident, loaded strokes that keep objects crisp while the background dissolves into abstracted color blocks. The mood is warm and festive, evoking the decorative richness of an Eastern bazaar corner.
