About this work
The circular plate centers on a shaggy-haired, horned satyr shown from the chest up, arms crossed and gripping a small ribbed bowl topped with a pinecone-tipped wand. His pointed ears, curling beard and sly half-smile fill the medallion, set against a dark teal ground, while a continuous garland of lemons, oranges and red berries frames the rim.
Warm ochre and terracotta flesh tones are built up in fine crosshatched brushstrokes that model the muscled torso and weathered face, contrasting with the flat glossy teal background. The tin-glazed surface gives crisp, graphic outlines to hair and fruit alike, producing a decorative, faintly mischievous character study typical of painted maiolica ware.
