About this work
In a boxing gym two men in the foreground trade blows: one in an olive shirt drives a gloved fist forward while his opponent in a blue shirt braces against the punch. Behind them other men in shorts work at hanging punching bags - one bare-chested figure adjusting his gloves near a red bag, another walking toward a doorway. Cables, pipes and a suspended pulley cross the yellow upper wall.
The palette is built from mustard yellow, slate grey and rust-red bags, figures blocked in flatly and outlined in dark contour, faces reduced to a few strokes. The composition's dynamic diagonals and cropped panel divisions convey the strain and motion of sparring bodies in a spare, workmanlike space.
