About this work
A bearded man is shown from the torso up, his body dissolved into a dense knot of dark scribbled lines as he tips his head back and reaches toward a nude woman standing beside him. She looks down at him with one arm raised, her form drawn in a few continuous open contour lines that contrast with his tangled mass of ink.
Worked in Indian ink with a loaded brush, the drawing alternates between sparse, fluid outline and thick, saturated black passages, with spatter and blot marks scattered across the paper. The rapid, gestural handling and stark black-and-white contrast give the scene an urgent, unfinished energy typical of quick studio studies.
