About this work
A pale, mask-like face fills the canvas, its features built from thick ochre and grey pigment: hollow shadowed eyes, a flattened nose, and a dark open mouth. The head tilts slightly downward, framed by streaks of orange above and pools of cobalt blue below, as if dissolving into the surrounding field.
Heavy impasto and knife work define the face, warm ochre set against cool ultramarine drips, with bruised greys and off-whites for the flesh. Thin vertical runs of paint fall like rain across the surface, giving the mask a decayed, unsettling presence in a rough, expressionist handling of the medium.
