About this work
A pale, bare-shouldered figure sits turned away, head in profile, one arm bent across the body, hair built up in thick gold and cream impasto like a crown. Dark reddish-black forms suggestive of drapery or wings spread outward, and a small heap of richly colored, jewel-like fabric sits at the lower right.
The ground is near-black, maroon, and olive, with paint dripped and dragged so it runs down the canvas in streaks. Thick, sculptural ridges of gold and white build the head and torso against the flat, stained darkness. The heavy impasto and somber palette give the figure an ambiguous, brooding presence, between portrait and apparition.
