About this work
A young woman's face and neckline appear out of a heavily worked, near-abstract ground, her head tilted with a faint, ambiguous half-smile. Dark strands of hair blend into the surrounding brushwork so that only the eyes, nose and mouth stay legible.
Thick vertical drags of umber, black and cobalt blue cover the surface, with scattered flecks of green and white breaking the dark field. The rough, unresolved paint handling gives the likeness a hazy, elusive quality, as if glimpsed through smoke or rain-streaked glass.
