About this work
A dark-haired woman is shown from the waist up, head tilted, gazing out with a distant expression. Her shoulders and chest are bare, one strap of a pink and gold garment slipping down, while tattered ribbons of paint hang from her torso like remnants of a costume. She emerges from an almost black background that isolates the illuminated figure.
Thick, dragged impasto builds the flesh in warm pink and ochre, set against near-black ground and streaked with metallic gold and pink for the costume fragments. Loose, gestural strokes and dripped rivulets of paint leave the forms unresolved, giving the figure a worn, disheveled quality. The high contrast of light flesh against darkness lends the scene a mysterious, brooding tone.
