About this work

A pale body lies horizontally across a dark stone slab, wrapped from the waist in coarse cloth, one arm draped down and the other bent across the chest. At the right a hooded, bandage-wrapped mourner leans in, gripping the feet; loose burlap and a patch of collaged fabric cover the lower body.

Built up with thick acrylic over a textured ivory ground, the surface is scored, cracked and inlaid with real cloth and cord so the figures read as relief rather than flat paint. Ochre flesh tones and grey shrouds sit against a solid, unmodulated red field, creating a stark, mournful contrast between raw color and worked, tactile surface.
