About this work
Two women stand side by side at a rehearsal barre, bent slightly forward with their heads inclined toward one another as if exchanging a few quiet words. Both wear dark practice clothes, one with a white cloth or scarf at her collar, their hands resting near the barre rail.
The scene is painted in a narrow range of browns and blacks, with only the collar, hands, and a sliver of background wall picked out in lighter tones. Brushwork is broad and economical, faces summarized rather than detailed, giving the small canvas a hushed, intimate, impressionistic feel.
