About this work
A single sunflower head fills almost the whole canvas, seen frontally and close, its dark seed disc dominating the center. A thinning ring of pale, almost bleached florets surrounds it, giving way to ragged, spiky yellow petals that splay outward against the plain cream ground.
The palette runs from near-black and olive through dusty yellow and white, applied as thick, encrusted paint scored with pastel and scratched lines. The handling is loose and physical, with an energetic, almost aggressive texture that reads as a flower past its peak, intense rather than decorative.
