About this work
The flower head is shown tipped downward and close, its seed disc filling the lower two-thirds in dense, mottled brown-green texture. Above it, the petals have gone pale and papery, curling and crumpling rather than standing open, while a few withered leaves hang along the bottom edge.
Muted off-white, olive and rust tones are built up in heavy, scumbled impasto, with soft, even overhead light that avoids strong shadow. The worn, drooping form and subdued palette give the picture a melancholic, late-season feeling rather than a fresh still life.
