About this work
A low classical building with an arched colonnade, small dome and columned portico stands at the far side of a still pond, half-screened by a row of bare, faintly budding trees. The structure's white walls and mauve roof dissolve into heavy grey-blue mist, with soft reflections of the trees and building rippling in the dark water of the foreground.
Painted in soft blue-grey and lavender tones touched with pale pink and white, the surface is built from feathery, dragged brushwork under a hazy veil of dry pastel that blurs every edge. Sky, trees and architecture merge into one atmospheric haze, giving the small palace a hushed, dissolving presence.
