About this work
A low, distant skyline of building silhouettes and scattered illuminated windows stretches across the horizon, mirrored in the rippling surface of a river or bay below. The composition is almost entirely horizontal, with a broad band of pale, mist-filled sky above and a narrower strip of reflective water in the foreground.
Executed in soft, blended strokes of oil and pastel, the palette is built from lavender, grey-blue and warm ochre touches that stand in for distant lamplight. Edges are dissolved throughout, producing a damp, atmospheric haze that evokes rain-softened night light over the city.
