About this work
Loosely brushed, barely distinguishable forms occupy a dim scene: pale draped shapes at left could be shrouded figures or pack animals, a denser cluster of dark heads and a horned or antlered form crowd the center beneath a red shape ringed with a yellow halo, and a solid brown animal, possibly a horse or donkey, stands feeding at the far right.
Built almost entirely from black, umber and dull ochre, the paint is dragged and scumbled thin in places, thick and dry in others, leaving many forms unresolved and overlapping. The overall darkness and unfinished, searching brushwork give it the character of a working study rather than a finished composition, its mood heavy and uncertain.
