Hiroshima

In the lower half a woman kneels in profile, pressing a pale cloth to her face as if wiping away tears or shielding her eyes, her dark hair falling loose over a rose-patterned garment. Above her the upper two-thirds of the panel dissolve into an immense billowing white form — folds and wing-like shapes that could read as smoke, cloud or drapery filling the sky.

The palette is almost entirely desaturated — pale blue-greys, ash whites and faded pink — applied in soft, smudged strokes that blur edges between figure and ground, with thin vertical drips running down the lower canvas like streaked rain or grime. The hushed, monochrome handling and the woman's hidden face give the composition a quiet, grieving stillness.
