About this work
A head and shoulders take shape from broad, dragged strokes of red-brown chalk on white paper: a domed forehead, deep-set eyes, straight nose and thick beard are all indicated with a few decisive marks rather than continuous outlines, the rest of the sheet left bare.
Sanguine is worked dry and scumbled so that fibrous, hatched textures build the volume of hair and beard, while the untouched paper stands in for highlighted skin. The palette is a single warm terracotta tone, and the sketchy, unfinished handling gives the study an immediate, searching quality.
