About this work
A man in a loose smock sits astride a bench in his studio, twisting to look back over his shoulder at the viewer. Before him a large board mounts Cyrillic lettering announcing the title, author, city and date of a print cycle; a spoked wheel and drapery stand behind him, while a windowsill to the right holds several sculpted busts and books.
Dense hatched lines in black ink build tone and volume across the figure and interior, softened daylight entering through windows at left. The graphic etching technique gives sharp contrast between white paper and inked shadow, producing a quiet, contemplative studio atmosphere.
