About this work
A pregnant woman sits against a headboard, her profile turned toward a man who lies along the same bed, his head pillowed on her rounded belly and one arm draped across her legs. A curtain is drawn back from a window behind them, the only source of light in an otherwise dark interior, and the two figures occupy the full width of the composition.
Dense etched crosshatching swallows the room in near-black shadow, leaving the woman's torso and the man's back picked out in fine, controlled lines of light. The tight, close-valued tonality and the stillness of the two reclining figures give the print a hushed, waiting quality, intimate and quietly expectant.
