About this work
A bearded young man appears bust-length, head tilted slightly, eyes fixed steadily on the viewer beneath heavy dark eyebrows. Thick black strokes model the hair, beard, and open-collared shirt, with a loosely brushed dark shape suggesting a shoulder or garment falling into shadow at the left.
Ink is applied both as fine hatched line work and as broad saturated strokes, giving the drawing a strong contrast between fluid brush marks and controlled linear shading. The muted grey ground and economical means produce a direct, unvarnished likeness with a graphic, print-like quality.
