About this work
Shown in profile, an elderly man with a bald head, deep wrinkles and an open mouth appears mid-speech or mid-thought, his gaze lowered. The drawn head is layered over and interrupted by a network of thin black rectangles, ruled lines and scaffolding-like shapes, as if the portrait were pinned beneath architectural sketches.
Rendered mostly in warm sepia and grey pencil-like strokes on toned paper, the piece is streaked with runs of white and grey paint and spattered droplets that blur parts of the face. The layered, unfinished quality of the drawing beneath the geometric overlay gives the work a restless, searching feeling.
