About this work
A frontal head study shows an old man with a deeply furrowed brow, a bushy moustache and long beard, and thick curling locks of hair falling from beneath a wide-brimmed hat down both sides of his face. The features are built from a few decisive strokes, with hatching used to suggest wrinkles and shadow around the eyes and cheeks.
Drawn in reddish-brown ink on cool grey-blue paper, the sketch relies on quick zigzag hatching for the hair and beard against smoother contour lines for the hat and face. The limited, warm palette against the toned ground gives the study a calm, observational, workshop-sketch character.
