About this work
A heavyset woman wearing glasses and a beaded necklace stands behind a market counter, one arm extended forward as if handing over change or goods. Behind her, roughly indicated shelves hold packaged items, jars and hand-lettered signs for tea, coffee and aloe with prices scrawled beside them. The composition is built entirely from quick contour lines and cross-hatched shading with no color.
Rendered in black ink on white paper, the drawing relies on fast, loose contour lines and dense hatching to suggest volume in the face, arm and shop fittings. Some areas remain lightly sketched while others are reinforced with darker, repeated strokes, giving the sheet the immediacy of an on-the-spot observational study.
