About this work
A nude male figure, rendered as a flat terracotta-orange silhouette, leans his shoulder into an oversized rounded boulder marked with pale striations, pushing it up a pale cracked incline. Smaller dark stones are scattered at lower left, and a horizontal white band cuts across the black background like a path or horizon, isolating the boulder and figure against the void.
The heavily scored black ground, built up with scratched linear textures, contrasts with the crackled white and ochre surfaces of the rock, giving the panel a rough, weathered relief. The flattened, silhouette treatment of the figure against richly textured stone creates a stark graphic tension between decorative pattern and the strained, mythic effort of the pose.
