About this work
A male and female dancer stand close together, arms interlaced and raised in a mirrored curved gesture. She wears a feathered headdress, gold bodice and pale blue harem trousers; he wears gold pantaloons, a beaded halter and a striped scarf at his waist. Both are barefoot on a tiled floor beneath a horseshoe arch patterned in blue star-tile ornament, a lyre-and-laurel emblem at its peak and the word "SCHEHERAZADE" lettered below.
Deep maroon and black diamond-patterned drapery frames the pair against cool blue tile borders and gold accents. Paint is applied smoothly with firm outlines and flattened decorative shapes rather than realistic volume, and the interlocking poses and rich, contrasting palette create a charged, theatrical intensity.
