About this work
A dancer in a spiked gold-and-blue crown and beaded, patterned tunic strides on one bent leg, torso twisted, head thrown back. He holds a white lotus blossom in one raised hand and a slim wand or flute in the other. A peacock with a fully spread train stands beside his feet, set against a backdrop of pale stone arches and stylized blue waves.
Cool blues dominate the whole surface, from the rippling backdrop to the dancer's bronzed skin and the peacock's iridescent tail, punctuated by warm gold ornament on the crown and costume. Paint is applied thickly, with raised, textured strokes on the architectural border and crown, giving the figure a dramatic, statuesque presence against the shimmering, watery setting.
