About this work
A gold-domed cathedral with a pedimented portico and colonnade dominates the center, flanked by smaller domed towers and rows of classical buildings receding on either side. The foreground square is dark and puddled, its wet, reflective surface doubling the golden dome and columns below the horizon line.
Warm ochre, umber, and gold tones are set against silvery-grey pooled water, the whole surface heavily worked with scraped, weathered impasto. Light concentrates on the gilded dome, creating a glowing focal point within an otherwise damp, subdued atmosphere that gives the scene a brooding, somber weight.
