About this work
In the left panel, a cluster of figures in blue, red, and yellow robes stands before a pale golden, statue-like figure wrapped in cloth, with a wooden scaffold and ladder rising behind them, a lamb at their feet, and a human head boxed in a small cage near a white shroud spread across the ground; in the right panel a bearded man in a pale robe stands by a slender tree as hooded women in dark cloaks process toward a tiered, domed shrine.
Painted in chalky, weathered ochres, dusty rose, and muted blue-greens with a fresco-like matte surface and heavy dark outlines, the figures read as flat, icon-like forms; the pairing of ritual procession and severed head lends the whole diptych a somber, ceremonial gravity.
