About this work
A girl wearing a crown of pink roses holds a fan-like shape and extends her hand toward a dark green mask hanging in the air between her and a young man in a tall triangular hat and a blindfold-like band across his eyes, who reaches back with a gloved hand. Smaller masked figures and a black bird-headed shape repeat along the lower edge, with a lantern set in the corner.
Costumes are broken into faceted patches of blue, gold, purple and green, giving the figures a mosaic or stained-glass structure against a stippled beige ground scattered with tiny painted sparks. The flat, jewel-toned patterning and the exchanged mask create a playful, theatrical, masquerade-like mood.
