About this work
A dancer is seen from behind and slightly to the side, seated with one arm raised to touch her hair and the other braced behind her. Her voluminous pale tutu spreads out beneath her, its layered skirt rendered in soft strokes, while her dark bodice and hair anchor the upper part of the composition.
Warm ochre and cream cross-hatching fills the ground, streaked with cooler blue-grey tones toward the edges, and touches of maroon outline the skirt's folds. The soft blending of charcoal and pastel, combined with the hazy, unfinished background, gives the study a quiet, dreamy intimacy centered on a private, unguarded moment.
